Emily's New Route is a magazine story, it was illustrated by using photographs from the television series.

Plot

Some new routes have been opened on Sodor and Emily has been given the flour mill special. James thinks she is lucky; he has the Black Loch run. James tells Emily that there is a big, scary monster in the loch. Emily is very relieved that she does not have to go there.

As Emily puffs to the bakery with trucks loaded with flour, the troublesome trucks see a chance for mischief. The trucks put on their brakes making Emily puff very slowly. This makes her very cross and she biffs the trucks hard, causing flour to fly everywhere.

The bakery does not get any flour that day and the Fat Controller will not get any bread in the morning. As a punishment, the Fat Controller puts Emily on the Black Loch run. Emily puffs nervously on her way.

Emily reaches the murky waters of Black Loch where she sees a dark, mysterious shape in the water. She thinks it's a monster, but after looking a little more closely she can see that the monster is only a seal. She decides that the Black Loch run isn't so horrible after all.
