Ulfstead Mine, also referred to as Stephen's Mine, is an old mine that was first introduced in King of the Railway. It is located beneath Ulfstead Castle. Stephen became trapped in it after he had to bash through the boarded up entrance to avoid a collision with some runaway trucks. King Godred's long-lost crown, which was stolen and hidden a long time ago by thieves, was also discovered here by Stephen during his time exploring the mine to find a way out.

In the eighteenth series episode, Missing Gator, the entrance to the mine was recently re-boarded up until some runaway trucks bashed through the blocked entrance and into the mine where Percy came to rescue them. The bridge had also been rebuilt from having partially collapsed in King of the Railway, suggesting that it may have been briefly reopened during the time between the aforementioned special and episode. In Bubbling Boilers, the entrance to the mine is shown to be once again re-boarded up until Thomas crashed through the blocked entrance after being unable to stop due to some bubble liquid that had been spilled on him. He raced out of control through the mine, bumping into mine trolleys, racing different directions along the numerous tracks and finally splashing through a waterfall and coming off the rails outside a second exit to the mine.

As of the twenty-first series, the mine is seen to be operational again. In Dowager Hatt's Busy Day, Philip is seen working at the mine, struggling to pull a heavy line of trucks before the lights of the mine suddenly go out, leaving him in the dark. In "A Shed for Edward", one of the various places Edward tries to sleep is the mine, only for the loud dynamite blasts to bother his sleep, making him whistle in fright.
